The Community Award goes to a group or organisation that has advanced HIV/AIDS issues in the community. Previous recipients include The Australian Federal Police Gay and Lesbiam Liason Officers, Bears Canberra, the Canberra Gay and Lesbian Qwire, and the Canberra Gay and Lesbian Tennis Club .
This year the council chose to recognise Paul Nicholson and Nick Henderson, who started bit_bent in 2002 as a social and support group for same-sex attracted young people.
For many young people, being same-sex attracted can be isolating. bit_bent has created a safe space where young people can spend the afternoon with other young guys and girls like them. The group meets on Monday evenings at the Belconnen Youth Centre, but often has organised social outings.
Nick and Paul have shown remarkable commitment in running the group every Monday night with very little funding.
The success of the group is shown by the large number of young people who regularly attend the group. Nick and Paul’s work has helped many young people in their personal development of these young people.
"The AIDS Action Council and People Living with HIV/AIDS ACT appreciate their ongoing commitment to HIV/AIDS education and health promotion by insuring updated resources are always available for the group and for the invitations extended to be guest speakers at some of the meetings" said Vice-President of the AIDS Action Council, John Guppy.
